Labor and Employment Law Seminar

The Illinois Small Business Development Center will present its next Labor and Employment Seminar free to the business community on Thursday, May 24th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Evanston Public Library at 1703 Orrington Ave. in Evanston. Charles Krugel, Attorney at Law with 13 years of experience in the field, will be leading a discussion examining a variety of human resources related issues such as what exactly is human resources and why it should matter to a small business owner; cost of employment disputes, hiring practices; independent contractor vs. employee classifications; and federal employment law as well as other laws likely to be encountered by small businesses. The seminar is co-sponsored by the Illinois Entrepreneurship Network, the U.S. Small Business Administration, the Illinois Technology Enterprise Center, the Evanston Public Library, the Technology Innovation Center, and The Human Resource Store.

What's the Illinois Small Business Development Center @TIC?

The Illinois SBDC (Small Business Development Center) is an SBA partner supported by the U.S. Small Business Administration, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and the Technology Innovation Center. Its mission is to provide professional business consulting and technical assistance at no cost to existing and new small businesses in the North Side of Chicago and Northeast Cook County.

The SBDC is located in downtown Evanston at the Technology Innovation Center, also known as The Incubator. It is a free resource to small business owners in the areas of financing, business planning, expansion, management, marketing, and other small business topics. Aside from individual consulting, the SBDC provides seminars and networking opportunities to more than 200 clients per year. Business owners and entrepreneurs come from as far Northbrook, Mount Prospect, Park Ridge, the North Side of Chicago, and other suburbs. The Illinois SBDC @TIC has a professional team composed of: Victoria Gheorghe, SBDC Director and Tim Lavengood, Executive Director of the Technology Innovation Center. Victoria brings in direct experience consulting with and obtaining SBA and other financing on behalf of small business owners and entrepreneurs. She has worked with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity SBDC Program since 2000. Victoria facilitates the loan application process for both the business owner and the financial institution interested in funding the project. Tim serves as a counselor for the SBDC and provides assistance to clients in the international trade and technology fields. He has extensive experience having worked as Program Manager of the Institute for International Entrepreneurship from 1995 to 1999, and as an Industry Specialist at the Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Science and Technology (CISST) at Northwestern University. Tim has been working as the Executive Director of the TIC since 1999.
